As Jake prepares for trial in Haven, an idyllic Texas town, things get complicated. The prosecutor sees a conviction as a stepping stone to political power and settling an old score with Jake. As he struggles to defend his client, Jake crosses paths with the sheriff, an old flame, as she investigates a human trafficking ring that may ensnare Rose. Will Jake mend his heart and save Rose? Or…will Jake lose it all and condemn Rose to suffer a fate worse than death?
Ties that Blind—Book One in the Jake Fox Series—is a heart-racing, tear-jerking journey from best-selling, award-winning author Michael Stockham.
Jake Fox struggled to escape the nightly vision ravaging his mind. His heart raced as he thrashed between consciousness and a delirious sleep, the sheets soaked with sweat. The dream always played in his head like a disjointed family movie reel. Night by night, he relived that fateful day and shuffled around his own frigid purgatory.
That morning, more than one year before, the stillness and silence from Lucy’s room unnerved him. Cool air drifted through the house. The first birdsong leaked through the windows as dawn unfurled around him. He should have heard his daughter’s music blaring and her hairdryer roaring. Lucy’s voice should have spilled from the room as she sang along with her favorite tune for the day, like every other fifteen-year-old. But that day… silence. The hallway presented as a tunnel, growing as he walked it, one bare foot in front of the other on the carpet. The walls closed in as darkness enveloped him. Intuition and dread lurched forward with him. He padded down the hall, praying that Lucy had overslept. But no light peeked from under her door. Something was wrong. He swung open her door. Her bed lay empty, still perfectly made. The hair on the nape of his neck stood on end, and an eerie emptiness descended on him.
Behind him, his blue heeler, Ted, scratched wildly on something wooden. Jake chased the sound and found his dog pawing to get into the garage. As Jake opened the door, the pungent, acrid smell of death washed over him…

★★★★★ I was incredibly captivated by the first chapter, wholeheartedly invested and devoured [Jake Fox Ties That Blind] in an almost one sitting. I loved the intricate balance between our young protagonist who was thrust into a dark world full of crime and corruption against the legal aspect of an emotionally scarred lawyer who struggles with his own personal demons from a life left in the shadows long ago. I turned page after page just fearing what might happen and wanting to know what the truth really was. I was quietly begging for Fox to be able to save a young girl who seemed likely to drown in a life she shouldn’t have been brought up in. What I didn’t expect, was to be swirled into a web of possibilities, each path as likely as the next. Everything in question, nothing for certain…and all of it unfolding like exquisite origami. This is a MUST read if you like mystery, legal thrillers, intrigue and something to pull at your heart strings a little. It’s the right mix to round out a story that I can’t wait to follow into the sequel!

★★★★★ Devastatingly Captivating! Be sure to have your tissues ready! The devastation in the first few chapters alone has me shedding tears. The author paints a very vivid picture of the tragic events that unfold, but leaves enough untold to draw the reader in. I was emotionally invested in this novel right off the bat and couldn't put it down!

★★★★★ Good, Exciting Thriller!
Jake, an attorney still mourning over the suicide of his own 15 year old daughter, must defend Rose, also 15 years old, for murdering her father. The prosecuting attorney wants to use this case to advance her career, while the judge in the case is missing his daughter, who is best friends with Rose. The story is fast paced with plenty of plot twists and turns. The ending of the book, raises more questions than answers. Good start to the series. The book is entertaining and enjoyable. It was hard to put the book down.

★★★★★ Jake Fox: Ties that Blind is a fun mix of thriller, suspense, and personal redemption. Jake Fox is finding his footing in his life again after the death of his daughter, Lucy. It’s through sheer chance that he gets involved in the drama that unfolds around Rose’s father’s death. He finds himself in charge of her defense and sees so much of his daughter in Rose, so it’s more of a personal goal for him to not fail her like he failed his child. Rose, still reeling from finding her father dead, is sucked into the legal drama and doesn’t know what to make of any of it. She’s just a teenager, she wants her dad, and has herself yanked from one shock to the next—losing her dad to being the one blamed to her best friend, Beth, turning up missing. The more they try to save Rose from being tossed in prison, the more they uncover the truth of who really took Beth…and who was actually behind her father’s murder. It turns out that a small town has plenty of places for snakes to hide. It’s up to Jake and Hope, the sheriff, to flush them out.

★★★★★ I loved this book [Jake Fox] from cover to cover. I reached the end of the book and couldn’t believe it when I read ‘Epilogue’ as a chapter title. I couldn’t believe it was over, I wanted more. Rose and Beth are the central characters, but you made Jake equally as compelling! A trial for a crime that wasn’t committed, a lawyer who sees visions of his deceased daughter, and a young woman who is on the brink of being sold into slavery. Each one on their own could be a book in of itself, but together? They became an utterly compelling masterpiece.

I cried, I laughed, I felt anger, I felt despair and I was on the edge of my seat…I couldn’t read this book fast enough! If a book makes me FEEL emotions while reading, I’m hooked for life. It eloquently ties two worlds together through the eyes of a new lawyer and draws you in to each side of the story."
